NORTHEASTERN OHIO SYNOD
July
11, 2011
Early assessments of flood damage and assistance needs are coming in from
our domestic companion synod. Four congregations were flooded, losing
boilers, electrical systems and kitchens. Preliminary damage
estimates are $1-1.5 million. Since a system of dikes and dams had
been built a while ago it was determined that flood insurance would
not be necessary in the Minot-Burlington area. Consequently none of
the congregations had flood insurance. These congregations are
Augustana Lutheran, Christ
Lutheran
and First
Lutheran
all in Minot and Peace
Lutheran
in Burlington
.
Bishop
Mark Narum also identified three other congregations that need our
help. Though these congregations were not flooded, 20-30% of their
parishioners were. The homes of four of the five pastors serving
these congregations were also flooded. These congregations are
Bethany
Lutheran,
Bread
of Life Lutheran
and Zion
Lutheran
all in Minot.
Contributions
can be made to the Northeastern
Ohio Synod
marked Lutheran
Disaster Response.
We will forward the money to the Western
North Dakota Synod.
Send contributions along with your congregation's regular mission
support to the synod lock box (PO Box 75532, Cleveland, OH
44101-4755). Bishop Narum has established a single relief fund and
asks that we do
not send
contributions directly to individual congregations.
They
have seven congregations in distress. We have seven conferences ready
to help. I am asking that each of our congregations "adopt"
a congregation in North Dakota. Bishop Narum says that the most
immediate need is prayer and messages of encouragement to the
congregations. They are not yet set up to receive work teams, but
will contact us when they are. In the meantime he suggests that those
willing to do relief work update Tetanus and Hepatitis A shots.
